[edit] AMBIVALENCES OF MEDIEVAL RELIGIOUS DRAMA

What is medieval religious drama and what function does it serve in negotiating between the domains of theology and popular life? This book aims to answer such questions by studying three sets of dramas: 10th-century Easter plays, 12th-century Adam plays and 15th- and 16th-century Passion plays.

By studying tenth-century Easter plays, twelfth-century Adam plays, and fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Passion plays the author traces both the historical development of the plays and the unfolding of the archetypal structure within which they grasp and act out salvation history. Grounded in Luhmann's emphasis of social functions over institutional structures, the book covers works from Germany, France, England, and Spain, and draws on a range of sources from folk rituals to high medieval theology. Scrutiny of the popular feasts and religious celebrations centering on Easter reveals recurrent patterns of distortion of their model, the Scriptural account of Christ's death and resurrection. The author shows that these theatrical and religious celebrations must have served as collective rituals of compensation in whose context the figure of Christ assumed the role of scapegoat. In so doing he also demonstrates the rewards of collaboration between medieval studies and contemporary cultural theory.
