Over the years historians have sought the truth behind the story of King Arthur. Many have produced plausible hypotheses, setting the Arthur story in Cornwall, in Scotland or in Wales. In this reassessment, Howard Reid suggests the King Arthur story actually has its roots much further afield.
Since Dark Age Britain was divided between the twin legacies of Celtic culture and the departed Romans, one might logically expect to find the trappings of King Arthur's story - swords in stones, round tables, chivalrous knights - in their myths and legends.
