Over the next week huge forces of the Royal Navy and RAF Coastal Command were devoted to finding, tracking and ultimately destroying the mighty German battleship. Along the way HMS Hood, an icon of Royal Navy power, was destroyed by a dramatic explosion during combat with the Bismarck. As the German ship raced towards the safety of a French port the British lost sight of her for a crucial period. Once found, she was crippled by a torpedo strike from a Swordfish biplane of HMS Ark Royal before being eventually trapped and sent to the bottom of the Atlantic by the Royal Navy. A stunning combination of colour maps, illustrations, plans, personal documents, reports and dispatches written at the time provides a unique record of one the most famous naval battles in history.
