This volume offers alternative conclusions about the cultural and psychological reactions to the plague, why it led more often to Renaissance optimism than to widespread despair as so often concluded.
This book offers new conclusions about the cultural and psychological reactions to the plague, why it led more often to Renaissance optimism than to widespread despair as is so often concluded, especially from literary sources in the north of Europe. Since the discovery of the plague bacillus in 1894 historians and those from the medical community alike have assumed that the bubonic plague of late-medieval Europe was the same as the socalled third pandemic unleashed at the end of the nineteenth century. Not only is the assumption inconsistent with contemporary descriptions of the plague it is also incompatible with quantitative evidence assembled by the author. Further, the assumption has blocked historians from studying the epidemiology of the Black Death and its successive attacks in fourteenth and fifteenth centuries - its spread, seasonality, cycles, and trends over time, which this book will explore for the first time.
