[edit] BLIGHTY

This is an analytical survey of Britain in the era of the Great War, focusing particularly on the period 1907-1922. It questions the common assumption that, because the war had a devastating impact on the British people, its social consequences must therefore have been equally lasting.

Because we assume momentous events must have momentous consequences, we tend to suppose that World War 1 shook British society to its foundations, leaving nothing of the prewar world intact. This ambitious study challenges that assumption. It shows how resilient prewar social structures and attitudes proved to be, given the innate conservatism of all classes, and argues that many changes attributed to the war had begun long before 1914, while some of those genuinely attributable proved surprisingly short lived. Illuminating life and culture at all levels of British society and offering rich incidental rewards beside its impressively argued thesis, this is a powerful and often moving portrait of an age.
