The enormous variety of different and co-existing social identities in Britain means that many historians have come to despair of the possibility of writing such a thing as the history of a nation. Yet the fact remains that Britain has an unusually clear objective existence: it is, after all, a single geographical unit, an island, nation, and the consequent physical isolation has given its people an acute perception of the boundaries between themselves and others. The approach adopted in this book is to concentrate on those areas where a sense of common nationhood has been most clearly exhibited: namely, politics - the struggle for control of national institutions of government, and to regulate the relations between social groups working within national structures - and the attempts to define 'Britishness' by reference to other nations and peoples, which have sometimes led to military conflict and imperial expansion. Rather than writing a detailed narrative of events, the aim is to suggest connections between developments at the political level and various economic, social and cultural trends. Each chapter is designed to convey a sense of chronological progress, but at the same time it is organised around broad conceptual themes that will hopefully illuminate aspects of the nation's life. If this book at least succeeds in demonstrating the continued validity of the British nation as a subject for historical inquiry, it will have served a useful purpose.
