No other writer of German-language literature in the 20th century has been as fully accepted into the canon of world literature as Franz Kafka. The seemingly ordinary, then unsettlingly, enigmatically surreal world depicted in Kafka's novels and stories continues to fascinate readers and critics of each new generation. At every social and aesthetic turn in the 20th century Kafka's works were read as if for the first time; this continues to be true. In recent years there has been a shift in Kafka criticism toward cultural studies, as is exemplified in many of the essays in this volume. Yet so self-conscious is Kafka criticism that linguistic and textual studies have continuously nourished each other, and close reading has never been abandoned. Reflecting these trends, the leading US and British Kafka scholars represented in the present volume employ a spectrum of critical approaches that figure significantly in reading Kafka today. Thus, although all the major works are covered, the same fictional text - The Metamorphosis, for example - may be treated by several authors with very different emphases. One thing has become wholly clear: although all theories attempt to appropriate Kafka, there is no one key to his work. The challenge to critics has been to present a strong point of view while taking account of previous Kafka research, a challenge that has been met by the contributors to this volume.
