Consuming Narratives is an edited collection dealing with the relevance of the concept and metaphor of appetite for understanding writing, politics, race, nation and gender in the medieval and modern periods. The essays trace the development of concepts of monstrous consumption through three key areas: the role of appetite in the construction of the self and its 'others', the use of the metaphor of appetite to represent sexual and epistemological activities, and the socio-political dimension of appetite. The volume is divided into sections dealing with sexual/textual consumption, monstrous bodies and the question of consumption in relation to races and nation; each section is each introduced by noted scholars in these fields. Individual articles consider texts such as Gower's Confessio Amantis, Julian of Norwich's Revelations of Divine Love and work by Shakespeare and Chaucer; topics dealt with include trade and colonialism, vampires, the sheela-na-gig figure and witchcraft.
