This work is a modern English translation of important source for English church history from Augustine's arrival in Canterbury in 597 down to the 1120s.
First modern English translation of important source for English church history from Augustine's arrival in Canterbury in 597 down to the 1120s when the work was being written. This is the first modern English translation of one of William's major achievements which, together with the Deeds of the Kings of England, account for his reputation. It is a survey of the bishops in all the dioceses of England from Augustine's arrival in Canterbury in 597 down to the 1120s when the work was being written. For the period after Bede's death in 730 it is the most important single source for English church history; he includes saints who were not bishops and religious houses, as well as bishops and cathedrals. Book 1 covers the archbishops of Canterbury and the bishops of Rochester. Book 2 deals with the bishops of London, East Anglia and Wessex. Book 3 moves north to record the deeds of the archbishops of York and the bishops of Lindisfarne and Durham. Book 4 covers the bishops of Mercia, and finally in Book 5, 'returning home after a long journey', William writes of the life of St Aldhelm and the history of his own abbey of Malmesbury.
