[edit] FUNNY, PECULIAR

Benny Hill's saucy smirks and lascivious glances at underdressed women are relished across all continents by all creeds. With the circus and sex in his background (his father sold condoms worldwide from a Southampton backstreet shop), Benny combined the two in a career that, after many struggles, took off in the earliest days of television.

A major, definitive biography of international TV comedy icon Benny Hill published for the tenth anniversary of his death. Alfred Hawthorn Hill rose from humble origins in Southampton to sell his peculiarly British saucy seaside-postcard humour to a vast and enduring international audience. He had a highly ambivalent attitude to women, shaped in part by his intense relationship with his mother. Smutty jokes were the hallmark of his act, yet after his marriage proposals were rejected, the 'family entertainer' sought unchallenging female company and anonymous travel to cities such as Bangkok and Hamburg. Despite his enormous wealth, he lived a very frugal bachelor existence, renting modest accommodation, taking public transport and answering his own fan mail. In the 1980s, while even his repeats drew huge viewing figures and his profile was increasingly global, he fell out of favour with the critics. Benny was ditched by Thames TV and never fully recovered from the blow. He died among dirty dishes and dishevelled papers, and inadvertently left an estate worth over 7M pounds to relatives he had hardly known.
