[edit] GENESCAPES

Genetic engineering could make a valuable contribution within agriculture, although the promise of more food, produced in an environmentally friendly manner, is not being fulfilled. This text argues that the precautionary principle should be applied far more extensively when GMOs are released.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are being released into the environment on a massive scale. Has sufficient attention been paid to the environmental costs? Transgenic crop cultivation causes genetic contamination in organic and seed crops. Modified organisms could become invasive or adversely impact non-target species. Genetic engineering could make a valuable contribution to agriculture, although the initial promise of more abundant food, produced in an environmentally friendly manner, is not being fulfilled. Instead the technology is being promoted at the expense of sustainable alternatives. Transgenic technology, inextricably linked with powerful multinational companies, patents on life and intensive monocultures, may threaten agricultural diversity and the rights of small farmers. Stephen Nottingham argues that the precautionary principle should be applied far more extensively when GMOs are released into the environment.
