[edit] LIBERALS, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND APPEASEMENT

This work shows the importance of analysing the 'low' politics of areas that have traditionally been dominated by 'high' politics.

Pioneering study of the Liberal party's views on foreign and imperial policy in the interwar period. A new study on appeasement and international politics in the 1930s. Challenges the revisionist view that appeasement was a good policy. Review coverage expected. During the 1920s and 1930s, Britain faced many challenges in the international arena, and alternative policies were hotly debated not only in Parliament but also in wider political circles. These two decades also constituted one of the few periods in British history when the country experienced three-party politics. However, as yet there has been no major study of the Liberal Party's central role in party-political debates on international policy. This volume fills that gap by documenting and assessing the party's views on foreign and imperial policy. In doing so, this book demonstrates the importance of analysing the 'low' politics of areas that have traditionally been dominated by 'high' politics. The role of bodies such as the Liberal Summer School and the Women's Liberal Federation are examined, along with the work of key thinkers such as J M Keynes and Ramsay Muir. Meanwhile, the author has had access to a new source on grassroots activism: the minutes of a Liberal debating society, known as the '8.30 Club'. This book makes two major contributions to our knowledge of the role of international relations in British politics in the inter-war years. First, by analysing the Liberal Party's principles and policies on international relations, it offers a new perspective on British Liberalism. Second, by exploring the Liberal Party's alternative to the Baldwin-Chamberlain policy of appeasement, it enters the lively historical debate on the options open to Britain in the 1930s, and shows that there was a Liberal alternative to appeasement.
