[edit] Nietzsche and the Philology of the Future
Drawing on Nietzsche's prolific early notebooks and correspondence, this book challenges the polarized picture of Nietzsche as a philosopher who abandoned classical philology. It traces the contours of his earliest philological thinking and opens the way to a fresh view of his later thinking.
Drawing on Nietzsche's prolific early notebooks and correspondence, this book challenges the polarized picture of a philosopher who abandoned classical philology, tracing the contours of his earliest philological thinking and opening the way to a fresh view of his later thinking. It aims to displace the assumption that Nietzsche passed from a precritical phase to an enlightened phase liberated from metaphysics, and to decenter the view that The Birth of Tragedy is a dramatic turning point in his thought. The book traces Nietzsche's efforts, throughout his career, to determine how philosophy and philology are symptomatic of modern cultural habits, ideologies, and imaginings. Philology, it can be argued, gives Nietzsche a deeper sense of the historically contingent nature of inherited conceptions, prejudices, and assumptions and of the culture in which these flourish.
