Award-winning translator Peter Constantine discovered Chekhov's early stories in the New York Public Library collection of rare Russian magazines. They had never been published in English before and instantly attracted wide debate, not least because of their surprising vivacity and the light they shed on Chekhov's later work. Constantine's translation of forty-three stories was published in the USA to great acclaim. The Duck Edition volume includes an additional seven stories, never before available in English anywhere in the world.
